Jawline filler uses hyaluronic acid to define the jawline and lower face, and chin filler helps balance the position of the chin in profile; the effect usually lasts 12–18 months and the filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. If the width of the lower face comes from the chewing muscle (masseter), filler alone may not be enough; a plan combined with botulinum toxin (Botox) may be needed, and for sagging a thread lift is considered. In a review of chin filler (8 studies, 917 patients) only 2 relatively major complications were reported; still, filler entering a blood vessel is rare but serious, and unusually severe pain, whitening of the skin or a change in vision is an emergency.
Jawline filler uses hyaluronic acid to define the jawline and lower face and create a sharper, more oval profile; chin filler helps balance the position of the chin in profile. In Mersin the two are often planned together, but not every lower-face concern is solved with filler: a feeling of width sometimes comes not from a lack of volume but from the chewing muscle (masseter).
Who Are Jawline and Chin Filler For?
Jawline filler is mainly chosen for profile balancing by people whose chin sits set back or whose lower-face line is not well defined; chin filler is often planned together with it. Three situations are common:
- Set-back chin: Filler aims to balance the profile by adding volume to the area. A systematic review of hyaluronic acid chin filler describes it as an option for people who want to correct a set-back chin and restore lost volume with a nonsurgical, temporary method (Ou et al., 2023).
- Poorly defined lower-face line: Jawline filler aims for a more oval look by defining the jawline.
- Age-related changes: Skin laxity and soft-tissue sagging can lead to jowling along the jawline, a drooping chin and less chin projection. According to one review, although surgical options (for example a chin implant) exist, nonsurgical methods are becoming increasingly popular because they are temporary, noninvasive and effective (Go et al., 2023). Filler adds volume and contour; it does not on its own correct skin laxity or marked sagging.
Filler, Masseter Botox or Thread Lift?
The three approaches that shape the lower face answer different problems and do not replace each other. Timings vary with the person, the area and the product:
| Approach | What it targets and when it is considered | Effect and duration |
|---|---|---|
| Jawline and chin filler | Adds volume and contour; considered for a set-back chin or a poorly defined lower-face line | Largely immediate, the final result settles in 1–2 weeks; usually lasts 12–18 months |
| Masseter Botox | Reduces the volume of the chewing muscle; considered for a broad or angular jawline and a prominent chewing muscle | Becomes noticeable in 15–20 days; repeating every 3–6 months is usually recommended |
| Thread lift | Lifts tissue with dissolvable threads and stimulates collagen synthesis; considered for mild to moderate sagging | Starts immediately, reaches full potential in 2–3 months; lasts 12–18 months |
A feeling of width in the lower face is not always caused by a lack of volume. When the chewing muscle (masseter) is prominent, jawline filler alone may not give the definition you expect; an integrated plan combined with Botox may give a more balanced profile. When jawline filler is planned in Mersin, this distinction is clarified before treatment with a facial analysis. For masseter Botox, see our botulinum toxin page. For how masseter Botox is done, when it takes effect and how long it lasts, see our masseter Botox guide.
The main aim of a thread lift is not to add volume but to lift tissue; it is considered for mild to moderate sagging, and in advanced sagging surgery may be more effective. For how Botox and a thread lift are planned together, see our article on Botox and thread lift combinations.
How Is the Plan Built?
- 1Examination and health history: Conditions that affect suitability, such as pregnancy, medicines you take, allergies and blood-thinner use, are reviewed.
- 2Facial analysis: The position of the chin in profile, the jawline and the prominence of the chewing muscle are examined; it becomes clear whether filler, Botox or both are needed.
- 3Area, product and amount: How much filler will go into which area is decided; the name of the product is shared at the consultation.
- 4Treatment: Topical anaesthetic cream is used for comfort and the injections are performed with a fine needle; the session takes 20–45 minutes.
- 5Result: The final result settles in 1–2 weeks, so the look in the first days should not be taken as the result.
How Long Does It Last, and What to Expect Afterwards?
The effect of jawline and chin filler usually lasts 12–18 months; the duration varies with the area, the product and the individual's metabolism. The body absorbs the filler over time; if a correction is needed, hyaluronic acid filler can be partially or fully dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase.
After the treatment, mild swelling or bruising settles within a few days; it is recommended to avoid makeup for the first 24 hours. For the first 24–48 hours do not massage the area firmly, and avoid sauna, steam bath and excessive heat. The final result settles in 1–2 weeks.
Risks and Urgent Signs
In a systematic review of hyaluronic acid chin filler (8 studies, 917 patients), most patients were satisfied and only 2 relatively major complications were reported; the most common side effects were swelling, bruising, pain, redness and itching at the injection site, and no vascular complications were reported (Ou et al., 2023). That does not mean the risk is zero: according to an anatomical review, the branching, course and depth of the facial arteries are highly variable, so it is not possible to ensure absolute safety with injectable procedures; the injector should explain the risk to the patient, be trained, and be equipped to treat a complication (Cotofana and Lachman, 2019).
Accidental injection of filler into a blood vessel is rare but a serious risk. If any of the following is present, contact the treating physician immediately and go to an emergency department:
- Pain: Unusually severe or steadily increasing pain.
- Skin colour: Whitening or coolness of the skin, or a net-like purple-blue discolouration.
- Vision: A change in vision, double vision or loss of vision.
- Signs of a stroke: Drooping of the face, difficulty speaking, or sudden dizziness or confusion.
In this situation a rapid response is decisive. Dr. Doğan Uysal's clinic keeps hyaluronidase; hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with this enzyme, and in the event of a possible vascular complication a rapid response with hyaluronidase is planned. For other unexpected symptoms, such as increasing redness and pain, discharge, or palpable firmness or irregularity, also contact the clinic without waiting.
Who Should Not Have It, or Should Postpone?
Jawline and chin filler is assessed for adults over 18 whose general health is suitable for the treatment. In the following situations the treatment is postponed or not performed:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Active infection, an open wound or inflamed acne in the treatment area
- Known allergy to product ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or lidocaine
- Bleeding disorders or ongoing use of blood-thinning medication (planned with physician assessment)
- Uncontrolled chronic conditions and active-phase autoimmune diseases
- Recent treatments in the same area that have not fully healed
If Botox is to be part of the plan, allergy to botulinum toxin and neuromuscular diseases (for example myasthenia gravis) are also assessed; in these cases Botox is not given. This list is general information; suitability is decided at a face-to-face examination.
