In recent years, salmon DNA (PDRN) therapy has gained momentum in the medical aesthetics field and is increasingly chosen for both its biocompatibility and its strong regenerative effects. So what does this therapy actually do, how does it work, and who is it suitable for?
"Salmon DNA therapy is a method that rejuvenates the skin from within by activating its own self-repair capacity, rather than covering it from the outside."
What Is PDRN?
PDRN is the abbreviation for "Polydeoxyribonucleotide." Obtained from the sperm cells of salmon, this molecule shows a high degree of structural similarity to human DNA. Used in a purified and sterilised form, PDRN is not recognised by the body as a foreign substance; therefore, the risk of allergic reaction is extremely low.
How Does It Affect the Skin?
PDRN's effect on cells is explained by two main mechanisms:
- A2A receptor activation: reduces tissue damage, suppresses inflammation, and improves blood flow.
- DNA fragment supply: provides the building blocks needed for cellular renewal, increasing fibroblast activity and supporting collagen and elastin synthesis.
As a result, a true regenerative process begins in the deeper layers of the skin. Moisture retention capacity increases, fine lines diminish, skin tone becomes more even, and overall tissue quality noticeably improves.
Who Is It Suitable For?
Salmon DNA therapy addresses a broad patient profile:
- People with sun damage and pigmentation concerns
- Those managing early signs of ageing
- Individuals with post-acne scarring and uneven skin texture
- Dry, dull and lacklustre skin
- People with under-eye darkness and fine lines
- Use alongside mesotherapy in hair-loss support protocols
What Is the Difference Between Salmon DNA and Mesotherapy?
- Mesotherapy: delivers active ingredients such as vitamins, minerals and hyaluronic acid into the middle layer of the skin; it is a "cocktail" in which several active components are used together.
- Salmon DNA (PDRN): focuses on a single active molecule (polynucleotide) and works as a biostimulator that triggers cellular repair. Its mechanism of action is deeper and its regenerative effect is more pronounced.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
Treatment is carried out by injecting the PDRN-containing product into the middle layer of the skin using fine needles or a dedicated device (meso-gun or manual technique). A topical anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand for comfort. Each session lasts on average 20–40 minutes.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
Typically 4–6 sessions are recommended, planned 1–2 weeks apart. Increased skin luminosity may be noticed after the first session; the main regenerative effect emerges cumulatively over the course of the programme. With maintenance sessions, the effect can be sustained 1–2 times per year.
Side Effects and Recovery Process
PDRN is a very well tolerated compound. Temporary side effects that may occur after the application include:
- Mild redness and swelling at the injection sites (resolving within a few hours)
- Rarely, mild bruising
- A minimal feeling of dryness or tightness
You can return to normal daily life on the same day. Intense sun exposure, sauna and swimming pools are not recommended for the first 24–48 hours.
Is Salmon DNA Safe?
Yes. PDRN is an approved compound that has been used in medicine for years to accelerate wound healing. Thanks to its biocompatible structure and low allergy risk, it may also be considered for sensitive skin. Nevertheless, an evaluation with a qualified physician is essential before the treatment.
When Are Results Visible?
The first changes are usually noticed after 2–3 sessions. The full effect becomes apparent within 4–6 weeks after the programme is completed. Skin renewal is a biological process that takes time; patience and consistency support a healthy progression. Results vary from person to person. Any treatment plan is subject to physician assessment.
