Botulinum toxin (commonly known as Botox) is one of the most frequently performed medical aesthetic treatments both worldwide and in Türkiye. Its popularity, however, comes with plenty of misconceptions. In this article I share the essential information for anyone considering — or simply curious about — botulinum toxin.
"Botulinum toxin is both safe and highly effective when delivered by the right hands, in the correct dose and to the correct area."
1. What Is Botulinum Toxin (Botox)?
Botox is the purified form of a protein called botulinum toxin type A. It softens the movement lines on the face by temporarily blocking muscle contractions. Injected into the mimic muscles, it temporarily interrupts signal transmission at the neuromuscular junction. As a result the muscles relax and the skin over them smooths out.
2. Where Is It Applied?
The most common treatment areas for botulinum toxin are:
- Forehead: Softening horizontal lines
- Between the brows (glabella): Deep vertical "frown" lines
- Around the eyes (crow's feet): Softening smile lines
- Brow lift: A subtle lifting effect on the brows
- Gummy smile: Correcting excessive gum exposure when smiling
- Jaw (masseter): Bruxism treatment and facial slimming (masseter botulinum toxin)
- Neck bands (platysma): Neck rejuvenation
- Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis): Treatment for the underarms, palms and soles
3. Is Botox Permanent?
No. Botulinum toxin is a temporary treatment. The effect varies with the treatment area and the individual's metabolism but generally lasts 3–6 months. With regular sessions, muscles gradually become accustomed to moving less, so the duration of effect may extend in subsequent sessions.
4. How Long Does the Procedure Take?
A facial botulinum toxin session is usually completed in as little as 10–20 minutes. A topical anaesthetic cream may be applied beforehand; many patients, however, tolerate the procedure easily without one. You can return to your daily activities immediately afterwards.
5. When Do the Results Appear?
The effect of botulinum toxin is not immediate. You will notice the muscles begin to relax between the 3rd and 5th day after injection; the full effect typically emerges on the 10th–14th day. During this period, no additional injections should be performed unless your physician instructs otherwise.
6. Who Is a Suitable Candidate?
In general, healthy adults over the age of 18 may consider botulinum toxin. It is not recommended in the following situations:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Neuromuscular disorders (such as myasthenia gravis)
- Active infection at the treatment area
- Known allergy to botulinum toxin
- Use of blood thinners (subject to physician assessment)
7. "Will People Notice I've Had Botox?"
Applied at the correct dose and with the right technique, botulinum toxin does not create an "artificial" look. The aim is not to freeze the mimic muscles completely but to soften dynamic lines while preserving natural expression. Excessive dosing or inexperienced hands can lead to a frozen expression, which is why the choice of practitioner is critical.
8. What Are the Side Effects?
Only products approved by the Turkish Ministry of Health are used. That said, as with any medical procedure, some temporary side effects can occur:
- Mild redness or swelling at the injection point (resolves within 1–2 hours)
- Bruising in rare cases (caused by tiny blood vessels being touched; disappears within a few days)
- Headache (usually within the first 24 hours; uncommon)
- Very rare: eyelid drooping (ptosis) — the risk is minimised with correct technique
9. What to Watch Out For After the Procedure
- Avoid lying face down for the first 4 hours
- Do not rub or massage the treated area
- Avoid intense exercise during the first 24 hours
- Stay away from saunas, Turkish baths and high-heat environments for the first 24 hours
- Limit alcohol consumption 24 hours before and after the procedure
10. How to Choose the Right Clinic and Physician
For botulinum toxin to be safe and effective it must be administered by a qualified physician. Botox is a medical procedure that requires anatomical knowledge, an aesthetic eye and clinical experience. When choosing a clinic, look at the following:
- The physician's field of training and experience (plastic surgery, dermatology, medical aesthetics)
- Use of original, licensed products
- A sterile clinical environment
- Genuine patient reviews and a transparent consultation process
- How thoroughly the consultation is conducted
"The naturalness of the outcome is determined by a thorough assessment of your facial anatomy and expectations during the consultation."
Botulinum toxin is often not used on its own; it is frequently considered part of a holistic facial rejuvenation plan alongside treatments such as dermal fillers and mesotherapy. For treatment areas and technical details, please see our botulinum toxin (Botox) treatments page.
Results vary from person to person. Any treatment plan is subject to physician assessment. For any questions about botulinum toxin or a personal assessment, you are welcome to contact the clinic. I will be happy to answer all of your questions during the consultation.
