The benefit you gain from mesotherapy does not depend on the procedure alone. The preparation you do beforehand and the care you take afterwards also directly affect the quality of the result. In this guide I explain how to prepare before your session and how to look after your skin afterwards, in a calm and informative way, from a physician's perspective.
"A good mesotherapy result rests on the right preparation beforehand and patient aftercare afterwards, just as much as on a correct application."
What Is Mesotherapy? A Brief Reminder
Mesotherapy is a treatment in which mixtures such as the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid that the skin needs are delivered directly into the skin layers through micro-injections. Rather than feeding the skin only from the outside, the aim is to support the moisture balance and vitality of the area from within. The content of the mixture and the session plan are determined individually; for this reason the first step of the process is always the assessment carried out with your physician. You can find detailed information about the scope of the treatment and the mixtures used on our mesotherapy treatments page.
Preparation Before the Session
The small steps you take in the few days before the session and on the day of the application make the procedure more comfortable and reduce the possibility of bruising and redness. It is advisable to pay attention to the following points:
- Share your medications: If you take aspirin, blood thinners or any regular medication, be sure to discuss this with your physician; only your physician can decide whether these medications should be paused.
- Arrive without make-up: Having clean, make-up-free skin on the day of the application makes the pre-procedure cleansing easier.
- Review the condition of your skin: If there is sunburn, active infection, a cold sore or irritation in the treatment area, it is more appropriate to postpone the session.
- Pay attention to your water intake: Drinking enough water in the days before the application supports the skin's moisture balance.
- Limit alcohol: Reducing alcohol consumption the day before the session may help lower the likelihood of bruising.
What Happens on the Day of the Application?
On the day of the application, your skin is first gently cleansed. To improve your comfort, an anaesthetic cream may be applied to the treatment area and left for a short time. The selected mixture is then delivered in a controlled manner to the target areas through micro-injections. The procedure is usually short and most people can return to their daily life after the session. You may feel a slight stinging sensation during the application; this sensation varies from person to person and is generally easy to tolerate.
The First 48 Hours After the Application
After the micro-injections, mild redness, small raised bumps or pinpoint areas of redness may appear on the skin. This is an expected response and usually subsides within a short time. Following the recommendations below for the first 48 hours helps you get through the procedure comfortably:
- Do not rub the area: Avoid touching, scratching and massaging the treatment area.
- Wait before make-up: Let your skin breathe for the first 24 hours and do not apply make-up.
- Gentle cleansing: Cleanse your face with lukewarm water using gentle movements, and stay away from harsh peeling and brushes.
- Avoid heat: Staying away from intensely hot environments on the first day may help the redness subside more quickly.
Aftercare and What to Avoid
The care you give your skin after the first few days supports how long the result lasts. The following points form the basis of post-session care:
- No make-up on the first day: Leave make-up until the next day so the skin barrier can recover.
- Pause heat and exertion for 24–48 hours: Avoid saunas, Turkish baths, intense exercise and activities that make you sweat during this period.
- Protect from the sun: Pay attention to sun protection in the days after the application; use a high-factor sunscreen.
- Moisturise: Support the skin's moisture balance with a gentle moisturiser recommended by your physician.
- Stay away from harsh products: Take a few days' break from retinol, acid-based peels and irritating products.
Session Frequency and How Long Results Last
Mesotherapy is usually planned not as a single session but as a course of several sessions. The number of sessions and the intervals between them are personalised according to your skin type, your needs and the intended result. Results do not appear all at once but emerge gradually, and they vary from person to person. After the first course, maintenance sessions may be recommended to preserve the effect achieved. This approach aims to support the vitality the skin has gained over a longer period.
Because your skin's needs differ depending on whether it is oily, dry or combination, the application plan is shaped accordingly. Topics such as choosing mesotherapy by skin type and the differences between facial and body mesotherapy can help you understand the approach best suited to your own skin. For a personal assessment you are welcome to contact our clinic, and we can discuss all of your questions about the preparation and aftercare together during the session.
