The success of a medical aesthetic treatment does not depend on the technique alone; post-treatment aftercare directly shapes the outcome. Appropriate care supports recovery, reduces the risk of complications and helps the effect last longer. Botulinum toxin (Botox), dermal filler, PDO thread lift, mesotherapy and chemical peels each have their own recovery window and aftercare needs. This guide brings together practical recommendations that apply across these methods. Results vary from person to person. Any treatment plan is subject to physician assessment.
General Rules for All Treatments
Regardless of which medical aesthetic procedure you have had, a number of universal rules apply in the first 24–48 hours:
- Do not touch the treated area: During the first 4–6 hours, rubbing, massaging or pressing on the injection sites can cause the product to migrate unintentionally.
- Avoid heat: Sauna, Turkish bath, hot showers and tanning beds are strongly discouraged for the first 48 hours. Heat increases swelling and may disturb the distribution of filler or botulinum toxin.
- Postpone exercise: Intense physical activity increases blood flow and can trigger swelling and bruising. In the first 24 hours it is safest to limit yourself to light walking.
- Avoid alcohol: Alcohol increases vascular permeability and significantly raises the risk of bruising; it should be avoided for 48 hours before and after the treatment.
- Sun protection is essential: UV radiation slows recovery and can also compromise the result. A sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher should be used starting immediately after the treatment.
Aftercare Following Botulinum Toxin (Botox)
A few points deserve particular attention after a botulinum toxin treatment. The full effect settles in over 10–14 days; during this window, avoid the following:
- Do not sleep face down: On the first night, sleep flat or slightly elevated, without putting pressure on the treated area.
- Facial expression exercises can help: In the first hours after the treatment, gently working the facial muscles (smiling, raising the eyebrows) may support the diffusion of botulinum toxin within the muscle.
- Avoid inverted head positions: Yoga inversions or lying face down on a massage table are not appropriate for the first 4 hours.
The effect of botulinum toxin typically lasts 4–6 months. Repeating the treatment at regular intervals allows the muscles to gradually thin over time, which may reduce the dose needed.
"Aftercare is an inseparable part of any medical aesthetic treatment. Even a well-executed procedure may fall short of the expected result if it is not supported by appropriate aftercare. Every treatment we deliver comes with a personalised care protocol."
Aftercare Following Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler
Swelling and bruising are common after filler treatments, particularly in the lip and under-eye areas. This is entirely normal and usually resolves within 5–7 days. To support the process:
- Cold application: A cold compress in the first 24 hours (never place ice directly on the skin — use a towel) helps reduce swelling.
- Reduce salt intake: Sodium promotes water retention and can worsen swelling.
- Postpone make-up: Avoid applying make-up for the first 24 hours; the injection sites may not yet be fully closed.
- Postpone dental appointments: After lip filler, delay any dental visit by at least 2 weeks.
Aftercare Following PDO Thread Lift
Of all these treatments, PDO thread lift requires the most extensive recovery window. Slight asymmetry, a feeling of tightness and tenderness in the face are normal in the first few days:
- Limit chewing: Avoid hard foods for the first week; jaw movements can affect the anchor points of the threads.
- No facial massage: Avoid applying firm pressure to the face for the first 4 weeks.
- Dental care and facial treatments: Postpone for at least 3–4 weeks.
- Sleeping position: Sleep on your back during the first week; sleeping face down or on your side can put pressure on the areas where the threads are placed.
Aftercare Following Mesotherapy and Skin Revitalisation Injections
After mesotherapy or a skin revitalisation injection (commonly known in Turkey as "gençlik aşısı"), redness, mild swelling and small injection marks are expected. These signs usually resolve within 24–48 hours. During this period:
- Avoid make-up and facial cleansers: Applying nothing to the skin for the first 6–8 hours reduces the risk of infection.
- Protect the skin from the sun: After mesotherapy the skin is more sensitive to UV damage.
- Stay away from pools and the sea: Contact with chlorinated or salt water is not recommended for the first 48 hours.
After any medical aesthetic treatment, following the personalised instructions given by your practitioner is the most important step, beyond any general recommendation. Whenever you have a concern, do not hesitate to call the clinic; early communication supports the early management of any complication. Results vary from person to person. Any treatment plan is subject to physician assessment.
